What should I bring to my tax appointment?

To help make your tax return appointment smooth and efficient, we’ve prepared a comprehensive checklist of documents and information you may need. Please gather the relevant items from the categories below and bring them with you to your appointment.

INCOME DOCUMENTS

Please provide evidence for any income received during the financial year:

  • Payment Summaries (if applicable – most are now sent directly to the ATO)

  • Lump Sum and Termination Payments

  • Employee Share Scheme Statements

  • Bank Interest Income

  • Dividend Statements (including reinvested dividends)

  • Annual Tax Statements from Managed Funds and ETFs

  • Share Purchases and Sales – include dates and amounts

  • Business Income and Expenses (if self-employed)

  • Foreign Income (pensions, investments, etc.)

  • Rental Property Income – include agent annual statements and details of expenses:

    • Council Rates

    • Body Corporate Fees

    • Insurance

    • Loan Interest

    • Repairs and Maintenance

    • Water Rates

    • Land Tax

DEDUCTIONS

Bring records to substantiate any deductions you intend to claim:

  • Work-Related Expenses

  • Motor Vehicle Expenses:

    • Kilometres travelled for work (up to 5,000km), or

    • Logbook with all related vehicle costs

  • Travel Costs (fares, accommodation for work purposes)

  • Work Uniforms or Protective Clothing

  • Self-Education and Training Expenses

  • Union Fees, Journals, Tools, Subscriptions, Memberships

  • Home Office Expenses

  • Phone, Computer and Internet Usage for Work

  • Seminars and Conferences

  • Other Work-Related Expenses

  • Donations to Registered Charities

  • Income Protection Insurance

  • Personal Super Contributions (with Notice of Intent to Claim)

  • Accountant Fees from Previous Year (if not with McMillans)

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Private Health Insurance Statement

  • Spouse Details, including taxable income (if not lodging through McMillans)

  • Bank Details for Refund (BSB, Account Number, and Name)

  • Number of Dependent Children (under 21, or 21–24 and a full-time student)

Please Note: Most employers now submit Income Statements directly to the ATO through Single Touch Payroll. McMillans can usually access these on your behalf.
