Business Student Cadetship (Accounting)

McMillans together with Federation University are offering a Work / Study opportunity for first year university students studying Business and Finance degrees at the Gippsland Campus. The position is an opportunity to gain valuable career development skills and experience with McMillans, while studying your Degree with Federation University.

Here’s how it works 

  • When an undergraduate position is available, McMillans will work together with Federation University Gippsland to advertise a position externally. 

  • Candidates are shortlisted by Federation University, with course entry requirements taken into account. 

  • We conduct interviews and offer successful students employment. 

It’s all about that work/study balance 

Depending on the course, a Cadet could be studying part-time and working full-time, or studying full-time and working part-time.  

The most common structure looks like: 

  • Cadets needing to attend classes, either in-person or online, two days a week for 24 weeks of the year. 

  • Cadets would be able to work up to three days a week during teaching periods and more in non-teaching periods. 

  • During teaching periods, while classes will be blocked into two days a week, additional reading and assignment writing will be required. 

About the role

Successful applicants will be employed as undergraduate accountants with the following specific tasks,

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports, including Profit & Loss reports, Balance Sheets reports and cash flow statements.

  • Preparing tax returns.

  • Reconciling of all general ledger and control accounts.

  • Assist with preparation of budgets and forecasts for company activities and performance monitoring.

  • Analyse general ledger transactions to ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Participate in training sessions.

  • Oversight and management of the FBT information worksheet.

  • Contributing to ad-hoc financial projects as needed.

Compulsory entry requirements for Federation University’s Bachelor of Business (Accounting)

A requirement of this cadetship is to obtain successful entry into the Bachelor of Business

(Accounting) at Federation University. Entry requirements for the degree include:

For Year 12 students (or Year 12 graduates within the past two years):

  • Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any English subject

For non-Year 12 students / mature-age applicants:

  • Previous higher education studies with results at a pass level, including any 'single subjects of study', or successful completion of a tertiary preparatory course such as the Federation Access Studies Program (FAST).

For applicants with previous Vocational Education and Training study:

  • Successful completion of a relevant VET qualification at Certificate III level or higher.

For applicants with work and life experience:

  • Applicants who have not completed secondary education, or undertaken any TAFE or university studies will not be eligible for direct entry. Applicants in this category should consider a pathway course such as Federation Access Studies Program (FAST).
